University of Kentucky Sports Wildcat Football

Charlie Pinson,Kentucky Insurance Agent and Kentucky Sportscaster

Mike Hartline, UK starting quarterback by default, as his back-up Curtis Pully gets in trouble in Louisville. Pully has been arrested for a marijuana possession a couple of weeks ago and then got arrested for driving on a suspended license last week. I expect the UK coaching staff will put some conditions on Pully's playing time, and rightfully so. Rumors are flying as to what the final outcome will be for Pully; but they are just that....rumors.

Unless I miss my guess, that moves Mike Hartline up into the starter position for UK Wildcats Football opener against the Louisville Cards. Hartline got some playing time last season behind Andre Woodson. Hartline is the kind of player the Wildcat offense can thrive with; a tall kid who can lay the ball out there. With the help of a few good recievers, this could be the start of something big for University of Kentucky Wildcat football.

Pondering the Pigskin Fans

They just don't make summer span as long as they used to! Here it is mid-July, and Kentucky sports talk is chiefly about the fall football season.

The University of Louisville Cards begin gridiron practice in two weeks. Three open practices will be held Aug 5-7; culminating with fan day on Saturday August 9 at Papa Johns Stadium. This year marks the second under head coach, Steve Kragthorpe.

Get Affordable Health Insurance KY

Up in the Bluegrass,University of Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks will be on hand at Commonwealth Stadium for the Wildcats fan day, also being held on Saturday, August 9 at 6:30 pm. In addition to an autograph session, various amusements will be along the stadium concourse. Topping off the Big Blue football extravaganza will be a fireworks show.

As has become a Kentucky Sports tradition, the Kentucky vs Louisville, Wildcat vs Cardinal, gridiron battle will be held Saturday, August 31 in Louisville. Look for Kentucky sportscaster, Charlie Pinson  on the sidelines bringing you Kentucky sports highlights.

No Tears for Billy "ACC" Packer

Being married to a Kentucky Sportscaster, I know how hard Charlie works to during high school games to be impartial. He keeps his observations positive, and encourages his peers to do the same. In the case of  Pikeville College Football,  yes Charlie is a "homer" but why shouldn't he be?

Most Kentucky sports fans grew up with the likes of Caywood Ledford, Al McGuire, and Dick Vitale all of which exuded a love for the game. Joe Nuxall, Cincinnati Reds Commentator, also comes to mind when thinking of positive and pleasant sports announcers. These guys make the game fun.

Get Kentucky Car Insurance Quote and Buy online

As for Billy Packer, CBS did us all a big favor. His negativity spilled over into his broadcasters, taking the joy out the spectacle. With Billy, there was no objectivity or even a pretense of common courtesy. If you weren't in the ACC you weren't worthy of breathing. His reported male chauvinism was inexcusable. Good bye Billy...don't let the door hit you in the rump!

Sad day at Churchill Downs

Luke Kruytbosh, age 47, the announcer of the past ten Kentucky Derbies was found dead yesterday. Kruytbosh brought a great enthusiasm and passion to Horse Racing. In addition to Churchill Downs, the announcer was the voice for Ellis Park in Henderson Ky. Official reports have not been released; but it is believed Kruytbosh may have had coronary problems.

Taking their cue from the Jockey Club's Thoroughbred Safety commision, the Kentucky Racing commission voted to do away with "toe grabs" on horse shoes. This will make the front shoes less than 2 m thick. If I understand correctly, this safety measure will not go into effect until the Kentucky General Assembly makes it so.

Gone fishing? Save Gas in your boat!

Kentucky Afield Outdoors:
Simple Tips to Conserve Gas When Boating

Frankfort, Ky. – It is amazing how quickly it happens. Your truck’s gas tank is nearly half empty by the time you finish a sausage biscuit and cup of coffee while driving to the lake with your boat in tow. The $4 per gallon gas stings your wallet. You may be well over $100 in the hole from vehicle and boat gas before making a single cast on a fishing trip this summer.

Large outboard engines drink gas at an alarming rate. However, a few simple tips can help you save boat fuel and reduce the financial pain of record gas prices.

Get Kentucky Auto Insurance Quotes

Patterning fish close to the launching the ramp is one of the best ways to burn less gas. You might be surprised how good the fishing is near a ramp or marina. Many anglers bypass this water because they are too pumped up to get to their honey hole 10 miles up the lake. Launching your boat closer to your fishing spot not only saves gas, but it gives you more fishing time and saves wear and tear on your boat.

Fishing near the ramp can provide a bonus for bass anglers because tournaments use boat ramps and marinas as weigh-in areas. Many tournament anglers also release their bass right there. This stacks fish up on nearby structure, such as points, weedlines, channel drops, fallen trees and stump beds.

You can also challenge yourself to see how many bass you can catch without even firing your boat’s big motor. Some of the best fishing days occur when electrical or lower unit failures force you to use your trolling motor only.

Get Affordable Health Insurance Kentucky

By eliminating the use of your primary motor, you must probe a point, channel drop or stump bed for fish thoroughly instead of making a few casts and running somewhere else. Fish don’t bite unless your lure is in the water. You won’t catch a fish if your lure is jiggling at the end of your rod while you’re making a run.

Another gas-saving tip: Lighten the load in your boat by taking out what you don’t need for your trip. If you plan to bluegill fish, you don’t need the heavy sinkers, cast nets, strong rods and big reels left over from your last catfishing trip on the Ohio River. Take that stuff out of your boat and store it. Things accumulate over time on a boat from each successive fishing trip. Just remember to keep the required safety equipment onboard, such as your life jackets.

Go through each storage compartment and eliminate things you won’t need. You’ll just need to make a list before your next trip. Put that weight on your garage or storage shed floor. Don’t make your boat motor push it and burn more gas.

Proper boat maintenance is another way to save gas. The only time many of us maintain our boat’s motor is when it malfunctions. A person of modest mechanical means can change the spark plugs, the lower unit oil and inspect the fuel lines for cracks or dry rot. Check the primer bulb and make sure it is pliable and stays firm after pumping it full of gas. This saves fuel.

Keeping the bottom of your boat clean also saves gas. If you store your boat in water for any length of time, algae grows on the hull. The drag it creates forces the engine to burn more gas to get the boat through the water. A clean hull glides over the water, reducing the engine’s workload. A clean hull also improves the boat’s handling.

Finally, pay attention to your boat’s prop. If your boat is slow to get on plane or lacks top-end speed, the pitch or diameter of your propeller may be off. Have your boat mechanic check the propeller performance and upgrade if necessary. It will pay for itself in fuel savings while increasing performance. A bent propeller or one with a chunk missing from it also costs gas. Replace a damaged propeller.

These simple tips will lighten the cost of your fishing trip by burning less gas in your boat. This means more fishing trips this summer and fall.

Curlin falls short at Belmont's Man O'War Stakes

The 2007 Horse of the Year, Curlin, finished two lengths behind Red Rocks in Saturday's Man O'War Stakes. Prior to the race, much talk had been circulating that Curlin could be a contender in Dubai, and in the Arc race in France. That scenario would make Curlin possibly the highest earner ever.

The Belmont match up was run on turf, which was a bit of an experiment for Curlin. With the defeat, trainer Steve Asmussen is keeping his cards close to his chest in regard to Curlin's next run.

Controversy continues to swirl around Curlin's ownership. This gets really complicated, but it seems that two Kentucky lawyers own 20% of the champion. These lawyers were involved in a big pharmaceutical lawsuit and won millions. Accusations are flying that instead of giving the cash to those who were represented; the lawyers pocketed an unusually large portion of the proceeds. Petitions on behalf of those who were represented, have been filed to force the sale of Curlin to make up for the shortfall. The lawyers are currently being housed in the Boone County KY jail.

Olympic Rules keep Kentuckian Tyson Gay out of 200 meter

Charlie Pinson Kentucky Sportscaster and Kentucky Independent Insurance Agent

In Olympic news, the Olympian from Kentucky  Tyson Gay  will be competing in the 100m dash, but not the 200m. Gay pulled up with leg cramps in the first round of the preliminary 200m contest. He will not be able to repeat a 200m gold medal in Beijing.

Kentucky Insurance Quotes Online

Many folks in the USA not happy about this outcome. The way the Olympics trials work, even if you are the best in the world and have been for several years, you still have to compete and win in the trials. No exceptions.

It could be that the USA Track and Field team will not be putting forth their best in the 200m, due to the "all or nothing" nature of the Olympic trial rulings. We respect Tyson Gay for his humble and eloquent acceptance of the rules. The rules are as they have always been. Yet, we have to ponder if these rules need revisiting.

I wish all the USA Olympians, and the Olympians with Kentucky sports connections, all the best as they pursue "The Gold" in Beijing China.

UK Basketball Museum Closed Lexington KY

Ken Hall, and Charlie Pinson Kentucky Sportscaster and Kentucky Insurance at Rupp Arena in Lexington KY

Too few people; Too few Revenues

It was two years ago this very weekend, Fourth of July, that Charlie and I took our then five year old nephew to the UK Basketball museum, located in the same building as Rupp Arena.

Get Kentucky Insurance Quotes

The museum was an excellent adventure. Jacob enjoyed the interactive exhibits; the basketball mannequins, and the fabulous fifties diner exhibit (Brookings Chili). Charlie liked the pictures of "his girl" Ashley Judd, and I got a kick out of the Valerie Still displays. The museum was very well thought out; and the displays sparked nostalgia and pride.

Jake enjoyed Pikeville College cheerleaders before the UK game; but he really wanted to go back to the UK Basketball museum

This past October, six year old Jacob, got to witness his first LIVE University of Kentucky Basketball Game in Rupp Arena. It was a banner day, Billy Gillispie's first UK game, Pikeville College Bears was the opponent, and Uncle Charlie was doing radio broadcasts from Rupp Arena rubbing elbows with the likes of UK legends Kenny Walker and Kyle Macey. Pikeville College had a pep rally before the game, and Jacob especially enjoyed his time with the Pikeville College cheerleaders!

When we got to Rupp, Jacob wanted to go back to the museum...but our time was short. I am so glad we did get in the first visit; and even though Jacob was only five when we made that trip...he still remembers it. He smiles sheepishly and shyly...then blurts out in ten decibels, "Go Big Blue!"

I am truly sorry the museum has closed. Charlie and I have visited several times, including a private party hosted by   Anthem Blue Cross Health Insurance.  Rumors have it than some of the exhibits may be relocated. We sure hope so. To dream of the future; we must reflect on the past.

Skin Cancer Risks

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 27, 2008) – Warm temperatures and extra hours of sunlight entice many to spend more time outdoors in the summer, dramatically increasing exposure to harmful rays that can cause skin damage and are linked to skin cancer.
This summer, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) wants all Kentuckians to protect themselves and their loved ones, particularly young children, from harmful sun exposure.

Get Kentucky Affordable Health Insurance

“The sun can be extremely damaging to a person’s health, resulting in painful burns, sun damage and in some cases, skin cancer,” said William Hacker, M.D., commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), part of CHFS. “It’s extremely important to protect yourself. Even more important is for parents to properly supervise their children and prevent them from experiencing painful and sometimes life-threatening burns.”

According to DPH, some sunlight - about 15 minutes twice a week - is necessary for people to make and use vitamin D. However, exposure in excess of this can be dangerous.

Twenty-seven Kentuckians were hospitalized due to severe sunburns in 2007, some resulting in dangerous second- and third-degree burns, according to the state Office of Health Policy. Of those, six patients were children ranging in age from younger than 1 to 12 years old.

Overexposure to sunlight can lead to extreme pain and skin injury, particularly for young children. The cabinet’s summer safety campaign stresses the importance of adults supervising and taking adequate precautions on behalf of children to protect them from serious sunburn.

“This is not only a public health issue, but it’s also an issue of our ability and willingness to protect and ensure the safety and welfare of our children,” Hacker said.

In addition to immediate pain, overexposure to sunlight, sun damage and burns can heighten the risk for developing skin cancer. According to the Kentucky Cancer Registry, the incidence rate of invasive skin cancer in Kentucky was nearly 22 out of every 100,000 people from 2001 to 2005. The mortality rate for the same period was 4.39 per 100,000 people.

Some tips for avoiding sunburn or side effects linked to sun exposure are:

  • Avoid sunbathing.

  • Avoid tanning parlors.

  • Wear a hat that shields your face from the sun.

  • Limit your sun exposure. The sun is hottest and strongest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or greater.

  • Wear sunglasses that are UV rated.

  • Choose cosmetics, moisturizing creams and lotions that contain sunscreen.
  • Protect your lips with products that have a sun protection factor of 15 or greater.
