Basketball Olympic Gold!

Charlie Pinson,Kentucky Insurance Agent and Kentucky Sportscaster

Team USA Men's basketball wins the gold medal for the first time in the last two Olympics. Dubbing themselves "The Redeem Team," they came to Beijing with markedly more passion and fire than any other group of NBA All-star players in recent Olympic history.

It's a thrill to see USA back on top in basketball. But what is more gratifying is seeing this group play as a team. This team took pride in representing the USA, and certainly weren't shy about expressing their patriotism. Congrats to Team USA Men's basketball team, and Coach K!

Team USA Women's basketball also wins Gold! That makes it four in row for the women. The team has dominated Olympic play for a number of years. Go Red, White and Blue!

UK Wildcat football coach, Rich Brooks, will have lots of "splaining" to do tomorrow during UK Football media day. With two players having scrapes with the law in recent weeks, there's going to be some changes in the lineup.  Charlie Pinson will bring you more comments after the WPRG-TV 5 Kentucky sports crew finishes their Wildcat Media day gig.

Here in the mountains, folks are gearing up for the annual Pike County Bowl sponsored by Community Trust Bank. Some controversy surrounding this year's choice of sports venues...a departure from the Bowl's traditions. Match ups will be at Shelby Valley High School and Pikeville City's Howard Field. The competition, slated for the end of August, promises to kick off the Kentucky high school football season in style.

Olympic Rules keep Kentuckian Tyson Gay out of 200 meter

Charlie Pinson Kentucky Sportscaster and Kentucky Independent Insurance Agent

In Olympic news, the Olympian from Kentucky  Tyson Gay  will be competing in the 100m dash, but not the 200m. Gay pulled up with leg cramps in the first round of the preliminary 200m contest. He will not be able to repeat a 200m gold medal in Beijing.

Many folks in the USA not happy about this outcome. The way the Olympics trials work, even if you are the best in the world and have been for several years, you still have to compete and win in the trials. No exceptions.

It could be that the USA Track and Field team will not be putting forth their best in the 200m, due to the "all or nothing" nature of the Olympic trial rulings. We respect Tyson Gay for his humble and eloquent acceptance of the rules. The rules are as they have always been. Yet, we have to ponder if these rules need revisiting.

I wish all the USA Olympians, and the Olympians with Kentucky sports connections, all the best as they pursue "The Gold" in Beijing China.

Twenty six year old Kentuckian, Tyson Gay, has a left leg sprain that kept him from competing in the 200 meter race this weekend. He has secured a ticket to Beijing with the 100 and 400 challenges. The well spoken Lexingtonian assures his fans he will be "100 percent" for the China sports spectacular.

Chip Ganassi Racing has no big-dog sponsor and is parking the Number 40 car for the rest of the season. Coors had been the major sponsor. Driven by Franchitti, husband of famous Kentucky sports fan Ashley Judd, the team had been in the position of qualifying each week as the team's accumulated points was less than stellar.

Horsing around the Track

They're opened. They're closed. They're open. Well, after some strategic maneuvering it appears Ellis Park will remain open this season afterall. If I were you, I'd call the track before scheduling a day at the races to be sure.

Rick Dutrow, Big Brown's Trainer, was suspended for drugging horses. I am not a Dutrow fan, and while I had big hopes for Big Brown's Triple Crown bid, I shrudder to think such a superior horse is in the hands of Dutrow. To me that's sad.

U of L Swimmers hopes of Olympic Glory
  Louisville KY

Charlie Pinson Insurance KY staff with mentor

Things have been a little restless here in our Kentucky insurance office. Charlie, a Kentucky sportscaster and Kentucky insurance agent,  has many friends in the Kentucky sports arena. Players, coaches, fans and reporters all have been filtering in the office looking a little lost. Call it withdrawals. Call it the summer doldrums. Call it whatever you want, without football and basketball these boys are just a little adrift.

The Olympics are coming...a great Summer Diversion

So maybe, we can get rid of the long faces and celebrate some Kentucky sports folks that may not get all the accolades they deserve. How about the University of Louisville Cardinals Swimming and Diving team? The Cards are sending seven swimmers to the Olympic trials! Way to go!

Big East swimmer of the year,Leslie VanWinkle, has been shaving time off her previous records and looks to be a real contender for Olympic glory. Louisville teammates Minnesota native, Liz Halet, and Alabama native Anna Dishuck will also be in the trials.

Looking the the Cardinal men, freestyle swimmer Carlos Van Isschot, a Florida native, is the most promising. Tim Collins, Doug Dietrich, and Chris Findorff round out the Cardinals hopefuls.

So get out of the summer doldrums. The Olympics are coming, and maybe just maybe some of that Kentucky sports fever can be quenched. Good luck to the U of L Swimming and Diving Team!
