It's a crazy year here in the Commonwealth. When fall rolls around, there's always great anticipation of the upcoming football season. And you know, I love my football! But this year is topsy turvy, and the buzz is all about Kentucky Basketball, both in Lexington and
Pikeville. Everybody know about Coach Cal, so let's focus on the up and coming star, Pikeville College Coach, Kelly Wells.

OH YEAH! A salesman, motivator, and charismatic leader the six foot tall (plus) coach is most often wearing a boyish grin. You know the wheels are turning, and he has big plans. (A National Championship!)

Yesterday, in a historic press conference, Pikeville College announced that the Men and Women's basketball teams will be playing all home games this season at the East Kentucky Expo. Not only will there be basketball matchups, there is the promise that games will be an EVENT. Lots of fun activities for all the family, plus loads and loads of exciting surprises!

When to news broke, the excitement in the room was palpable. The Expo Center is by far the best facility in the nation, for NAIA level competitors. And just think of the intimidation factor to our opponents! Not to mention, what a recruiting tool!

Spring is in the air...there's a new wind blowing!

If you noticed our absence from this blog, well forgive us. Charlie's broken leg has not slowed him down much...but I have had more responsibilities shuttling him around and literally getting "the leg work" done here in our insurance office.

March Madness is usually one of my favorite times of year; but this year was just kinda flat. Shelby Valley Wildcats did well in the Kentucky Sweet Sixteen, but did not dominate. Billy G couldn't even deliver a trip to the NCAA. And Rick Pitino, one of my favorite coaches, couldn't get Louisville to the top spot either. Sigh. I grew up in Kentucky, and Kentucky is basketball country...just grim pickin' as of late.

Enter John Calipari. Hello...and OH be still my heart! A self described "gatherer", a well-known motivator, a philanthropist with a penchant for children's charities, and a record as a winning coach Calipari brings the class back to a tarnished Kentucky Wildcat legacy. When he acknowledged Bill Kightley's wife...and praised Kyle Macey's work ethic I could have just hugged his neck!

I believe that if you have discipline and work hard, and respect the people around you you create your opportunity to excel. Seems like that is what Coach Calipari is all about, too.

Hurrah for Morehead State Eagles winning the OVC (Ohio Valley Conference) title! It's been almost a quarter of a century since the Eagles made "the big dance", the NCAA Tourney. We are taking some ribbing from agent Mark Frantom a Morehead State alumni. "What happened to the Big Blue?" he asks.

Here in Pikeville KY we are wrapping up the fifteenth region tourney tonight at the Expo Center. Charlie and I are pulling for the "home team" Shelby Valley Boys who have been on fire all season. Their most worthy opponent is Lawrence County.

In girls action, Johnson Central beat Phelps High School this weekend.

Looking to the Kentucky Derby, I Want Revenge, may be the horse to watch according to equine authority The Bloodhorse. After I Want Revenge's win in the Gotham Stakes The Bloodhorse calls the contender "the total package."

There is a little trepidation about I Want Revenge's jockey, Joe Talamo. A mere 19 years old, Talamo is being compared to my jockey hero Stevie Cauthen. (Steve Cauthen is from Boone County KY) We'll take a wait and see on that note.

In today's electronic edition, Insurance Journal is reporting that Churchill Downs has enacted new guidelines to insure safer racing conditions. Among the changes; more stringent steroid testing and age restrictions.

These are in response to Larry Jones' filly, Eight Belles, who was put down following her ill-fated race at Churchill Downs Kentucky Derby. A premier racetrack, I commend Churchill for stepping up and taking a lead to insure better safety for both the horses and jockeys. However, let me point out that Larry Jones never faulted Churchill Downs turf as a determining factor in Eight Belles fatality.

It is tourney time in the Mountains, and with Charlie in a wheelchair I have been forced to attend a few more high school basketball games than I would choose. Nevertheless, a team we can get excited about is Shelby Valley's Men's basketball. That team is on fire....and look out Sweet 16! Truly an exciting team to watch.

In girl's action, I have to say that Betsy Layne's Lady Bobcats made a good showing against Pike Central Lady Hawks. It's hard to explain, but as a dancer I look at movement on the floor a little different that most sports fans. Betsy Layne's players have a fluidity of motion that some how carries them through.

At the Pikeville Women's Club, the chatter this week was all about the Kentucky Wildcats. There is a feeling of impatience and restlessness about the team and the coach. Maybe we are a little slanted to our mountain boys, but John Phelphry is a class act and could probably be had for less money and much better public relations than our current coach. Just an opinion.

John Wooden NAIA Hall of Fame

WOODEN TO BE INDUCTED INTO NAIA HALL OF FAME

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced today that legendary coach John Wooden will be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame during a special ceremony held in conjunction with the 72nd Annual Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship Tip Off banquet on Tuesday, March 17, 2009. The celebration will take place at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at the Conference Center Grand Ballroom located in downtown Kansas City. In Wooden’s absence the NAIA will show a special tribute video taken during Jim Carr’s, NAIA President, visit to Wooden’s home this past week in Los Angeles.

“I am very flattered to receive this award. My association with the NAIA was really wonderful. One should get personal satisfaction and joy out of being inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame and that certainly is true about my situation,” said Wooden. “I have many friends that have been inducted and I just appreciate those who thought I was worthy to join them.”

An American icon, legendary coach, respected educator and role model, Coach Wooden will enter the NAIA Hall of Fame in the meritorious service category. Wooden’s impact on collegiate athletics began in Terre Haute, Indiana, when he served as athletics director and head basketball and baseball coach at Indiana State University (1946-1948).

In 1947, Wooden and the Indiana State Sycamores won the conference title and received an invitation to the NAIB, now the NAIA, national tournament at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. Wooden refused the invitation citing the policy that banned African American players from competing. Wooden declined to compete if a member of his squad, Clarence Walker, was not allowed to participate. The following year, the NAIB changed its policy, and Wooden with Walker, guided the Sycamores to the national championship game losing to Louisville, 82-70. Perhaps his actions opened the door for Tennessee State and Coach John McLendon to win the first of three consecutive national championships in years to follow. Wooden’s involvement in breaking the color barrier in college athletics, and his story in doing so, signify his principles as a human being. Although his professional coaching career in the NAIA was limited to two years, his contribution and stance for justice is a cornerstone of the NAIA legacy.

“We are honored to welcome Coach Wooden into the NAIA Hall of Fame. He is a tremendous testament of character-driven intercollegiate athletics and continues to be a mentor to many. His contributions and decisions have shaped the game of basketball and opened the door for numerous young men and women,” said Jim Carr, NAIA President and CEO. “Coach Wooden is a legend on many fronts including player, teacher and coach. I admire his unwavering commitment to use the power of sport to teach lessons for life. It is a pleasure to recognize Coach Wooden in the meritorious service category.”

Following the 1948 season, Wooden left Indiana State to become the most decorated coach in college basketball history at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Over the course of 27 seasons Wooden led the Bruins to seven consecutive national championships, 10 total and an 88-game winning streak that still stands today. During his tenure at UCLA, his teams won 38 straight games in the NCAA tournaments. To this day, Wooden retains the title Head Men’s Basketball Coach Emeritus at UCLA.

Wooden’s awards and accolades are too numerous to count but more important are the lives he’s touched through the great game of basketball. For Wooden’s work on and off the court he is recognized in Hall of Fames throughout the country. The honors list is highlighted with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Wooden is a member of the founding class of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. ESPN has called Wooden the “greatest coach of all-time in any sport.”

Wooden has modeled his life around the principle that athletics is an integral part of the total education process. For his continued work in promoting character-driven intercollegiate athletics the NAIA is proud to induct Coach John Wooden into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame is the highest bestowed by the Association and consists of a division for each sport and recognition for meritorious service.

There's A New Bear Coach...Pikeville College's Joe Johnson

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Pikeville College didn't have to search far for its fourth
football coach. On Monday afternoon, defensive coordinator Joe Johnson
accepted the task of leading the program.

Johnson served the 2008 season as assistant head coach and defensive
coordinator while coaching defensive backs and kickers. Despite its 2-9
record, the Bears were first in the Mid-South Conference against the pass.

In addition to his efforts with the defensive unit, Johnson coached junior
Kyle Chilton through his first-team All-American season.

Johnson is a native of nearby Abingdon, Va., and has a Bachelor of Arts
degree from Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va. His experiences on both

stint as head coach at North Greenville College in Tigerville, S.C.

In addition, Johnson was defensive coordinator and secondary coach at

Kentucky Derby...The Hat's the Thing!

I cannot believe it, but the daffodils are in full bloom at the federal courthouse here in Pikeville. With all the gloom and doom in Washington, and with our own trials and tribulations sometimes we need a glimmer of spring. Today, it came via FedEX. Yep, my 2009 Kentucky Derby chapeau arrived. It's a large cartwheel style hat, a striped number featuring baby blues, twinkles on metallic gold on a field of natural straw. Whoo-hoo! Surely a sign from above that spring is not far from our door!

Baffert Among my Favorites

While the field for the Kentucky Derby is far from being "firmed up" there are some clear favorites in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool Number 1. Mike Battaglia has Pioneer of the Nile at 12-1 odds. Pioneer of the Nile has posted some impressive winnings, but all on synthetic tracks. What can he do on Churchill's turf? Pioneer of the Nile is being trained by bad boy Bob Baffert. Baffert, that silver haired jean wearing fox, is a perrienal favorite with me.

Battaglia also has Old Fashioned at 10-1 and Friesen Fire at 12-1; both of which are being trained by Larry Jones. I like Larry Jones too; and he seems to be very excited about Old Fashioned. After his elation last year at The Oaks, and the huge trama of losing Eight Belles at last year's Derby my heart is with Jones too.

But as I said in the opening, it's all about the hat. The horses and the players may change, but come Derby Day I am ready. I have "The Hat." Now all I need is "The Dress", "The Shoes" and "The Bag."

Hello, from my new throne...the big blue wheelchair. Yep, I was hanging a big screen TV in our new home and fell from a ladder. Leg is fractured; and let me tell you it hurts my pride more than my body!

The Louisville Courier Journal is reporting that Covington Holmes Bulldogs Ricarado Johnson and Elijah Pittman are being courted by Coach Billy G and the UK Basketball Wildcats. Bulldogs Coach David Henley must be excited about that!

The dynamic duo recently attended the Big Blue match-up against Vandy. If you don't know, Covington Holmes is the alma mater of UK Wildcat Dickie Beale. If Johnson and Pittman show the heart in playing that Beale did, well I hope Billy G will suit them up!

Ask anyone and they'll be sure to tell you I am a Pikeville College Football nut. But they don't always mention, I am also a Pikeville College Basketball nut. After missing a few games due to my injury, it was a real treat to be back on the hardwoods at Pikeville's Gym. Congrats to both the men's and women's teams on their hard-fought victories this weekend.

Saratoga Sinner is Out

Saratoga Sinner is out of contention for the Kentucky Derby. The Holy Bull winner has a chip in his leg, after finishing the aforementioned race. Saratoga Sinner is under the direction of Louisville trainer, Eddie Kenneally. The son of Harlan's Holiday is expected to recover; after surgery here in the Bluegrass.

Speaking of Harlan's Holiday, another son Danger to Society, is now training under Rick Dutrow. As you may remember, Dutrow was Big Brown's trainer. Frankly, I am not a fan of Dutrow...and I think Big Brown could have done better under a different trainer. But what do I know? It's been awhile since I mucked any stalls.

Dutrow has several other horses under his tutelage, including Patena. Patena is slated for the Louisiana Derby in March. The horse may make a showing at Keeneland for the Bluegrass Stakes.

As part of our family Derby celebrations this year, we too plan to honor Eight Belles. We will be ringing my Grandma's old dinner bell eight times just before the Derby. Citing the sagging economy and weak ticket sales, the CBA league will be ending the season early. Pikeville's East Kentucky Miners is of course part of that league.

The future of the league seems uncertain, but the Miners may return next season. We sure hope so! Charlie and I love the games, and we had season's tickets this year. With our recent home move, and now with Charlie's leg broken we haven't gotten out like we should, but we did support the Miners with the Pike County Chamber of Commerce packaged tickets.

Pikeville College Football Coach Resigns

Say it Ain't So...

A few minutes ago, we recieved word that Pikeville College Coach Mac Bryan has resigned as Head Coach of our beloved Football Bears. Citing his father's health issues, Mac will be moving to be nearer his parents.

Charlie, Mark, and I were saddened by the news. Mac and his wife, Vickie, are not only part of "the football crowd" they are dear friends. Mac and Charlie have spent many hours together, on and off the turfed gridiron. Charlie hosts "The Bear Facts" TV Show for Mac, and of course we see the Bryan's socially.

It is not easy when a parent or loved one is ill, and we surely understand that Mac needs to be with his family. We wish him and Vicky only the best. It is our sincere hope the Pikeville College Head Coach position will be filled quickly and we can continue a football tradition at Pikeville College.

It's the first time in three years that Charlie and I haven't gone "bowling" for New Years with our Big Blue Cats. We just moved into our new house, and while we love the Big Blue Nation, we are a little tired from all the move coupled with holiday activities. So this year, we rounded up our college crowd and had them over for an evening of Wildcat football.

I must apologize for our abscence from the Kentucky sports scene blog. It's tough to build a house, move into a house, host Thanksgiving for 18 in the middle of moving, and now getting the house decorated for living...let alone the holidays. Not to mention, we run a Kentucky insurance agency belong to a number of civic organizations, and of course cover local Kentucky sports through WPRG. It's been an exciting but hectic time for us.

When it’s all said and done, it won’t be too much of a stretch to call Kyle Chilton the most decorated player in the brief history of Pikeville College football.

The decorations got even more colorful for Chilton on Monday. Hours after being named Mid-South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second straight week and third time this season, Chilton took another honor.

He was named the NAIA’s national Special Teams Player of the Week.

On Saturday Chilton accounted for all of Pikeville’s points in a 14-6 loss to U.Va.-Wise, booting field goals of 46 and 45 yards.

Chilton, a 5-11, 170-pound junior from Clearwater, Fla., is no stranger to the honor. In fact, it’s the third time he’s been the national recipient of the award in his career. He won it twice as a freshman.

“Kyle is an outstanding football player,” said Coach Mac Bryan. “With all due respect to the other terrific kickers out there, we think he’s the best in the country. And when we say that, we mean it – he’s the best on any level.”

Chilton is all over the Pikeville College record book. He holds the record for the longest field goal in school history, a 61-yarder in 2006, and also has the second and third longest ever. In 2006, he made 14 of 23 field goals, both school marks. He once tried five field goals in a single game, which is the record. As a punter, he has the third- and fourth-longest in school history.

And in the career section of the record book, he appears nine times, including two places he stands alone at the top – in punts inside the 20 with 35, and the one he set on Saturday, when his first field goal gave him the record for field goals made in a career. He now has 29.

On Saturday, he averaged 44.4 yards on five punts, including one that sailed 55 yards.

Chilton has been named MSC Special Teams Player of the Week six times in his career.

As a freshman, he was honored after leading the Bears to an overtime win over Cumberland University. He hit a 50-yard field goal as time expired to put the game in overtime and then another to win the game.

Four weeks later, he closed out the season with the 61-yarder at WVU Tech and was honored by both the MSC and NAIA again.

He won the conference honor last week as well, when he kicked a 49-yard field goal and was 3-of-3 on extra-point kicks in Saturday’s 42-24 loss at Union College. In addition, Chilton punted five times for an average of 37.6 yards.

For the season, Chilton is tied for the league lead in field goal percentage, having hit 6-of-8 (75 percent). He’s also third in the conference in punting at 40.7 yards per punt. His punting average is 10th in the country.

Chilton and the Bears will play their final home game of the 2008 season on Saturday when they host Georgetown College. Senior Day festivities will begin shortly after 1 p.m., with kickoff set for 1:30 at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.

Top Kicker Chilton named player of the week by MSC

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – It’s not exactly been an ideal season for the Pikeville College football team, but placekicker/punter Kyle Chilton has kept a slow, steady pace.

It’s not going unnoticed; on Monday, Chilton was named the Special Teams Player of the Week in the Mid-South Conference.

Chilton, a 5-11, 170-pound junior from Clearwater, Fla., was honored after kicking a 49-yard field goal and going 3-of-3 on extra-point kicks in Saturday’s 42-24 loss at Union College. Chilton is having a solid if not flashy season. He is 4-of-6 on field goal attempts this year, and is 13-of-14 on extra-point tries. His 25 points leads the team and is 10th in the league.

“We just haven’t scored enough to give him very many opportunities,” said Mac Bryan. “Anytime we get close we feel like we need to go for it to get the touchdown and not kick the field goals. We’ve probably cost him more kicks than we’ve let him try.”

Chilton is also the punter for the Bears, and is averaging 40.2 yards per punt this season. He has trapped the opponent inside the 20 11 times. When he did so on Saturday, it was the 33rd of his career, passing Don Paul Branham as the all-time leader in the category.

His average is good for third in the MSC.

Chilton was the winner of this award after the Week One loss at Brevard College. On that night, he was 2-of-2 on PATs and hit a 29-yard field goal in a 20-17 loss. In addition, he punted eight times for an average of 41.4 yards on Saturday, including three inside the 20. He had punts of 48, 50 and 56 yards in the loss.

It is the fifth time in his career he has been named Special Teams Player of the Week in the Mid-South Conference. He has been tabbed the national player of the week on two occasions.

Chilton and the Bears will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host No. 11 U.Va.-Wise at the Hambley Athletics Complex. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Bethel ruins Homecoming with 42-10 win

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore tailback Justin Woodard ran for 175 yards and a touchdown Saturday afternoon as Bethel College spoiled homecoming at Pikeville College with a 42-10 win.

Woodard carried the ball 24 times in the win, only the second in six outings for the Wildcats, who were preseason No. 6 in the NAIA poll and a national quarterfinalist a year ago.

Pikeville fell to a dreadful 1-5.

Bethel wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, going 51 yards on seven plays with the final 41 coming on a pass from senior quarterback Chad Lamping to senior wide receiver Will Cripps. It was the first of two touchdown passes Lamping would throw to Cripps and the PAT by senior Sean Fraser made it 7-0 with only 2:15 off the clock.

The Wildcats led 14-0 after Woodard’s one-yard scamper ended an 89-yard drive in the first period, and it was 21-0 after freshman tailback David Brown scored from 13 yards out to close an 83-yard drive.

Pikeville got on the scoreboard late in the first half when junior Kyle Chilton made a 24-yard field goal.

The third period was more of the same for Bethel. Lamping hit senior Joevaris Carter on a five-yard pass, Brown scooted in from five yards out and Lamping found Cripps for 21 yards to make it 42-3 by the end of the third period.

Pikeville scored its only touchdown on a 15-yard pass from sophomore Dan Wideman to freshman Lamar Brown with 12:48 left to close out the scoring. It capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive.

Woodard’s efforts led a 254-yard rushing day for the Wildcats, who averaged 6.2 yards per carry. Lamping was 12-of-22 for 191 yards with three touchdowns. His favorite target was Carter, who caught five for 79 yards, and Cripps, who had 71 on only three catches.

Pikeville, meanwhile, had a season-best 206 yards on the ground, with Wideman picking up 78 on 16 carries. Senior tailback De’Rail Sims finished with 65 yards on only nine carries.

In the air, Wideman was 17-of-32 for 182 with two interceptions and the one score. Montrel Jones caught five for 40 yards, while Brown’s touchdown was one of four catches for 58 yards.

With the five catches, the freshman Jones has 40 on the season, tying him for the second-most in a season since Pikeville began varsity football in 2001. He is 11 shy of teammate Justin Lamb’s single-season mark of 51, set in 2006.

Bethel’s defensive attack was led by defensive back Johnathan Deberry’s 10 tackles. Nine of those were solos and he had one of Bethel’s interceptions. Junior DB Antonio Wardlow had eight tackles, all solos, with one tackle for loss, an interception and a blocked field goal.

Pikeville got six tackles from junior linebackers DeVaughn Whitley (four and two) and Kenny Harris (two and four). Harris added a sack for a nine-yard loss.

Leaving the office at 3 o'clock is not an easy thing to do; but travel to Morehead we did with the Pikeville College Bears yesterday. Rick Bentley, Shane Murray and myself headed to Morehead KY for the match up between the Bears and KY Christian's Knights.

In this week's "Bear Facts" show on WPRG-TV 5, Coach Mac and I were cautiously optimistic with predictions for the showdown in Morehead. And the game, well it was a close one...with the Bears pulling out their first win of the season in Overtime.

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Pikeville College snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, and needed nearly everything it had to keep Kentucky Christian from picking up its first varsity win.

Pikeville (1-3) knocked off Kentucky Christian 20-14 in overtime Thursday night, but the story of the final isn’t nearly as interesting as the road to the final.

Trailing 14-7, the Bears got the football back with 1:47 left in regulation inside their own one yard line. They faced fourth-and-10 at their own one when sophomore quarterback Dan Wideman hit freshman receiver Montrel Jones for a 20-yard gain. After carrying for 10 yards and throwing an incomplete pass, Wideman was chased out of the pocket and scrambled 48 yards before being chased out of bounds at the Knight 21 yard line – and then was hit running out of bounds, moving the ball to the 13.

On the next play he threw over the middle where junior Nick Jamerson made a diving catch in the middle of the end zone with only 11 seconds left. Junior Kyle Chilton’s PAT sent the game to overtime tied at 14.

The Knights had the ball to start the extra period and had it first-and-goal at the two before tailback Jake Hughes lost a fumble which Pikeville sophomore Jamar Porter recovered to turn the ball back over to the Bear offense.

On the first play, Wideman scooted around the left end and sailed 25 yards into the end zone for the win.

Of Pikeville’s 436 yards of offense on the night, Wideman was responsible for 410 – 312 passing and 98 on the ground.

Pikeville fumbled a punt after stopping the Knights on their first offensive series and KCU took over at the 24-yard ling. The drive ended on the sixth play when freshman quarterback Beau Dailey hit sophomore tailback Ronnie Smith from 11 yards out. Matt Prewitt’s PAT made it 7-0 with 11:46 left in the opening period.

The Bears moved the ball down field before Wideman was hit on a sack and dropped the football. Freshman linebacker Kevin Mix picked it up and ran 67 yards for the score to make it 14-0 with five minutes left in the opening period.

It turned out to be the final points of the night for the Knights, and for the longest time, looked as if it would be enough for a team in search of its first win in school history.

Pikeville recovered a fumbled punt to get the ball on the KCU 14-yard line late in the first period, and on fourth-and-three sophomore De’Rail Sims carried for a seven-yard touchdown, with Chilton’s PAT making it 14-7 with 13:52 left in the half.

It stayed that way until the touchdown with 11 ticks remaining in the game.

Wideman was 26-of-47 for 212, hitting Jones eight times for 130. Jamerson’s touchdown catch was his sixth for 62 yards. Wideman carried 16 times for hit 98 yards.

KCU (0-4) ran the ball 42 times for 162, with Hughes picking up 81 on 21 carries. The quarterback combination of Dailey and Ricky Phillips was 19-of-33 for 227 yards. Sophomore Austin Hunter caught five for 32 yards, with Paintsville product Ron Blume catching three for 42 yards.

It's been a tough season for Pikeville College Bears Football fans thus far. But Saturday's match up between the Bears and Shorter College's Hawks had a couple of bright spots. Our former file clerk, #85 Justin Lamb, has reached a milestone of over 100 carries which is a school record.

The other bright spot, was at halftime the Pikeville College Bears Women Bowling team received their National championship rings for their stellar performance against a myriad of teams including NCAA, NAIA, and other conferences. You go girls!

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Pikeville College scored on a seven-yard touchdown with 6:29 left in the first half to tie Shorter College 17-all.

And that was all she wrote for the winless Bears, who watched the Hawks score 35 unanswered points and roll to a 52-17 win at Hillard Howard Field Saturday afternoon.

The touchdown, a pass from Dan Wideman to Nick Jamerson, ended a 10-play, 80-yard drive that took 5:16 off the clock. From there, though, it was all Hawks, who went ahead on a 61-yard pass from Ben Williams to T.C. Jay only 42 seconds after the game was tied.

The Hawks closed it out with four rushing touchdowns. Ramone Nesbitt had runs of two and 14 yards before Chris Chapman broke loose from 52 yards and Adrian Hargett from three.

A.J. Cooley got the Hawks on the scoreboard with a five-yard run to end a seven-play, 69-yard drive that took 3:46 off the clock. Wideman, however, tied it 1:38 later when he scampered 78 yards for pay dirt. It was the fifth longest scoring play from scrimmage in school history and the third longest run.

Shorter (2-1) wasted no time in regaining the lead, as a five-yard Ben Williams run ended an 80-play drive to put the Hawks on top 14-7 with 3:09 left in the opening period.

The teams traded field goals – a 25-yarder by Pikeville’s Kyle Chilton and a 21-yarder by Lukas Gonzalez for the Hawks – before Jamerson’s touchdown catch briefly tied the score.

Shorter had 441 rushing yards on a day it averaged 7.7 yards per carry. In the air, the Hawks were 2-of-6 for 63 yards. Chris Chapman and Ben Williams each had 100-yard rushing days; Chapman finished with 138 and Williams 108. Five different Hawks scored the six rushing touchdowns. Jay caught both compete passes.

Wideman, the sophomore quarterback, carried most of the offensive load for the Bears. He had 103 yards on 11 carries and was 24-of-32 for 156 in the air. Montrel Jones finished with 53 yards on eight catches, while Jamerson hauled in six for 44.

Senior wideout Justin Lamb had four catches for 31 yards on a day he became the first Bear to reach 100 catches in a career. He now has 103.

Shorter’s Josh Gibson and Pikeville’s Daryl Wideman each had 11 tackles; Gibson had eight solos while Wideman finished with seven. The Hawks also got a double-digit game from Will Oliver, who had 10 tackles and forced a fumble. Pikeville sophomore Michael Tackett, making his first career start for an injured Sean McKinley at linebacker, finished with eight tackles and a pass breakup.

The Bears have a short week coming up, traveling to Morehead State to play Kentucky Christian on Thursday night. Opening kick is slated for 8 p.m. Shorter will host Faulkner next Saturday.

Pikeville College Bears Bowling Team to be honored at Saturday's Football Halftime

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The final celebration of the Pikeville College women’s bowling national championship from last April will be held on Saturday afternoon when the team receives their championship rings.

The ceremony will be held at halftime of Pikeville College’s football game against Shorter College, which is set for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

Pikeville won the 2008 USBC Collegiate women’s championship last April 19 when it knocked off top-ranked Wichita State University by scores of 184-171 and 183-158 in Wichita. The title marked the second won by the women’s bowling team, following their 2004 championship in Tulsa, Okla. That title also came at the expense of Wichita State.

“We’re very excited about our championship and are pleased to get to share it with our fans at Saturday’s game,” said Coach Ron Damron. “We were honored to represent Pikeville and Pikeville College in the national tournament and hope our fans are as happy for us as we were to represent them.”

In addition to the rings, 94th Dist. State Rep. Leslie Combs will be on hand to present each member of the team with certificates naming them Kentucky Colonels.

The 2008 championship ended an eventful week for the Lady Bears. Pikeville entered the tournament ranked second in the coaches poll and third in the writers ratings. In its run to the championship, the Lady Bears defeated No. 4 Lindenwood, the other 2/3 in Central Florida and finally top-ranked Wichita State. And, for good measure, it knocked off Maryland Eastern-Shore, which won the 2008 NCAA national title one week earlier in St. Louis.

The win capped an eventful week in Wichita for the Lady Bears, who had both the national player of the year in senior Kayla Bandy — for the second straight year — and rookie of the year in freshman Ashley Galante. Both were named first-team All-Americans, while teammate Jennifer Wright was named to the second team.

Furthermore, with this year’s championship, every young lady who has spent four years as a part of Ron Damron’s program has won a national title.

While eight members of the team participated in the tournament, all 21 of the players will receive rings and be named Kentucky Colonels.

Lambuth earns first win in rout of Pikeville KY

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Just to be clear, the first 31 minutes of Saturday’s Mid-South Conference football game between Lambuth and Pikeville was completely the property of the guests.

Lambuth needed 20 seconds of the second half to push its lead to 35-0 en route to a 49-27 win over the Bears on a day the temperature on the turf at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex reached 107 first-half degrees.

In that time, two different Eagle quarterbacks had thrown a pair of touchdowns and one had run for another. It wasn’t until the fourth period that the Bears showed some life in falling to 0-2 on the season.

Lambuth (1-2) needed less than 3 ½ minutes to score its first touchdown, ending a nine-play, 75-yard drive with a seven-yard pass from Josh Garza to Landon Talley. The PAT boot Ryan Nanny made it 7-0.

By the quarter’s end, Garza had dove across for a one-yard score and backup Adam Wiese had gone to Edward Robinson for a 14-yard score to make it 21-0. Wiese found Marquis Williams late in the first half from 15 yards out to send the teams to the break at 28-0, and Garza struck again 20 seconds into the second half to make it 35-0.

The Bears got on the scoreboard on their next drive when Dan Wideman hit De’Rail Sims from 16 yards out to make it 35-7, but Brian Keaton scored on runs of six and 11 yards, the latter coming with 12:42 left in the game, to make it 49-7.

A change of quarterbacks brought about a slight change of luck for the Bears, who scored three times in three minutes down the stretch thanks to a turnover and a pair of sustained drives. Junior Chris Walker came in and hit Montrel Jones from 10 yards out with 3:39 left. Nine seconds later, freshman Sebastien Cajuste picked up a fumble and went 17 yards for the score. The final touchdown was again from Walker to Jones, this time from seven yards out with 40 seconds left.

The touchdown drives for the Bears both lasted eight plays, the first going 46 yards and the last 58.

Garza and Wiese combined to go 23-of-34 for 334 with four scores and a pick. Talley hauled in six passes for 101 and two touchdowns on a day that 11 different Eagles caught the ball. Ten Lambuth players ran the ball for a total of 209 yards and an average of 5.4 yards per carry. Williams led the troops with 73 yards while Keaton, who had the two scores, finished with 70.

For Pikeville (0-2), Wideman was 20-of-37 for 207 yards and a score but was intercepted three times. The three picks marks the fourth time a Bear has been intercepted that many times in a game; the record is four. Walker was 7-of-11 for 57 yards with the two scores.

Jones hauled in eight balls for 46 yards to lead the way, while senior Justin Lamb led the way with 63 yards on four catches. On the ground, the Bears finished with 95 yards on 27 tries, with Sims leading the way with 41.

Lambuth got five tackles each from Ladarruis Madden and Jason Ware, with Ware having three for a loss of yards. Travis Norris led the Bears with seven solo tackles and a forced fumble. The sophomore now has five forced fumbles in his 13-game career; the school record stands at six.

Jessica Lovell added to
Lady Bears’ staff

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – When the 2008-09 basketball season begins at Pikeville College, a familiar face will be on the Lady Bears bench, albeit in a different role. Jessica Lovell, a four-year starter at point guard who graduated in 2007, has been hired as the new top assistant to Bill Watson.

Lovell finished her career at Pikeville with 499 points and 486 assists, which is an average of 4.2 per game. She started 116 of the 127 games in which she played. She also recorded 188 steals and 254 rebounds.

“Jess was an outstanding player for us who battled health issues throughout her career,” said Coach Bill Watson. “We also felt she’d be an outstanding coach and we’re thrilled to add her to our staff here. She will make an immediate impact on our program, just as she did as a player.”

Last year she was the head coach at Belfry Middle School, which she led to the county championship after recording a 27-7 record. She was also an assistant coach at her alma mater, Belfry High School.

While at Belfry, Lovell played in two Sweet 16s and joined the 1,000-point club.

“I’m very pleased to come back to Pikeville College,” Lovell said. “It’s a place I’ve always felt at home and I couldn’t be happier about being here. I hope I can bring something to the table to help make this team a winner on a yearly basis.”

She was four-time Academic All-Conference and as a senior was an Academic All-American. In addition, she was a three-year team captain.

The Lady Bears open the 2008-09 season on Tuesday, Nov. 4 when they entertain Virginia Intermont College.

Well, former Pikeville College Football Coach Jerry Mynatt may not be Willie Nelson, but he can sure sing up a storm.

Storm? Funny you should mention storm, as there is a hurricane brewing of the Carolina Coast. Now a hurricane is not a tornado, but Pikeville College Bears are playing the Brevard College Tornadoes tomorrow in Brevard North Carolina. Pikeville fans will see the irony as Brevard's Assistant Coach is none other than Jerry Mynatt.

The Tornadoes have never met the likes of our Bears; in fact the Brevard storm have never beaten an NAIA opponent. That's "beary" good news for Mac Bryan's Pikeville squad. However, the Tornadoes are coming off a loss last weekend; and may be feeling the pressure.

A big part of any Kentucky Sports weekend, is visiting with the Kentucky sports media from across the Commonwealth. This past weekend's Wildcat vs Cardinal battle at Louisville's Papa John Stadium was no exception.

We got a few minutes to talk with former Kentucky basketball Wildcat, Kenny "Sky" Walker. Naturally, the conversation turned to this year's UK Wildcat Basketball program. Walker, a Kentucky Sports broadcaster, said he had set in on a recent practice. In Walker's opinion the new guards are looking sharp. He noted the guards looked more athletic than Derrick Jasper. Their shooting may need some work. On ball handling, they looked impressive and are well able to push the ball up and down the floor.

From all accounts, Coach Billy Gillespie seems to be recruiting alot of athletes as opposed to shooters. That sounds like there will be more running up and down the hardwoods than in previous years. That will give some help on the inside for Patrick Patterson, the incoming transfer.

Kentucky wins big over Louisville

It was a beautiful day for Kentucky Sports action in Louisville's Papa John Stadium, Sunday. The annual Kentucky Governors Cup match up between state rivals the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the University of Louisville Cardinals is an exciting way to kick off the college football season.

Rich Brooks' Kentucky defense looked good in the opener. The Wildcats chalked up a 25 point win over Steve Kragthorpe's Cards. A couple of big spots out there for the Cats on defense; and the pass defense was great!

David Jones, a Belfry High School, had four knockdowns for the Wildcats; slapping down a quartet of passes during the Blue vs Red match up. It is exciting to see a Pike County KY athlete do well.

It was a great day for Kentucky Wildcat, Myron Pryor. He brought home a big 70 plus touchdown run that was a highlight of the day.

Three State Resort Parks To Offer Fall and Winter Elk Tours

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky State Parks will again be offering elk tours this fall and winter, allowing visitors to see these majestic animals up close.

Tours have been added at Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park – one of three parks that host the event. Elk viewing is also offered at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park and Pine Mountain State Resort Park.

The return of elk to the region is considered to be one of Kentucky’s biggest wildlife management success stories. The animals, after being gone from the state for 150 years, were returned in 1997. They now number more than 8,500.

You can pick out a weekend, stay at a state park lodge or cottage, and rise early to enjoy one of these unique tours. Participants should bring their cameras – there should be great photography opportunities. The largest elk herds are located on privately-owned lands that are normally closed to the public. This is one of the few opportunities available for the public to see the greatest number of elk.

Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park in Perry County is offering elk tour packages. The park’s weekend packages include a night’s lodging, two meals, and the elk tour. The package price is $150 per couple; $110 for individuals. Morning tours leave at 5:45 a.m. Stay an extra night Saturday for $45. The elk tour alone is $30. (The park reserves the right to cancel tours due to inclement weather.)

Buckhorn Lake has a lodge, cottages, Bowlingtown Country Kitchen, hiking trails, mini-golf and fishing.

Tours offered at Pine Mountain State Resort Park near Pineville are $20 a person ($10 for children 12 and under). Pine Mountain has a rustic lodge, modern cottages, log cabins, Mountain View Restaurant, hiking trails, championship golf course, interpretive center, mini-golf, naturalist programming, and a gift shop. The park also conducts a popular series of special events throughout the year.

The dates of the Pine Mountain elk tours this fall are Sept. 19-20; Oct. 10-11; Oct. 17-18 and Oct. 31-Nov. 1, and in 2009 Jan. 9-10, Jan. 16-17, and Jan. 23-24. Call Pine Mountain at 1-800-325-1712 for information and reservations.

Jenny Wiley State Resort Park at Prestonsburg offers half-day tours that include a continental breakfast and costs $20 for adults and $10 for children under age 12.

Countdown to Kentucky Football Kick-offs

It's football season in the mountains, as Pike County high school football checks in with our annual Pike County Bowl. Four games coming up this weekend, with two tonight and two on Saturday night.

A new format this year, the first night will be held at Shelby Valley High School and the second night at Pikeville's Howard Field. This year's Bowl is a real showcase of Kentucky High School Football.

Louisville's Holy Cross travels to Pike County to take on the Belfry Pirates. Belfry is a powerhouse, and was edged out of the state championship game in 2007. Belfry looking to do as well, or better this season. A force to be reckoned with; the mighty Pirates have many returning players.

Pikeville Panthers and Corbin are the premier match-up on Saturday night. Both, are traditional Kentucky football powers. Pikeville will be bringing a new coach and a new system to Howard field. We'll just have to wait and see if Pikeville can "bring it." Corbin's hounds only lost one game last season; and are heavily favored in this match-up.

East Ridge and Shelby Valley will battle it out tonight at Robinson Creek. East Ridge Warriors comes to the field with a new coaching staff; all graduates of Pikeville College. The Pikeville College proteges' will bring a "run and shoot" offense to the field.

Shelby Valley Wildcats has continued to improve; and have been stepping up their game in recent years. The Shelby Valley "Blue Crew" is one of the strongest student pep sections in the area; and maybe they'll have something to cheer about tonight. East Ridge vs Shelby Valley will be one of the interesting battles of the Pike County Bowl!

Revving up for game time is not easy for us women. Football is especially tedious as the weather is predictably hotter than the Sahara desert or colder than the Artic tundra; and usually on the same day. So of course layers are a must. When you have kids, grand kids, nieces, nephews, and second cousins twice removed playing on the team, it is essential you wear team colors from head to foot. Blue for Phelps Hornets and Pike Central Hawks, Orange for Shelby Valley Wildcats, and Red for the Belfry Pirates. Don't forget Black for the East Ridge Warriors, and Maroon for the Pikeville Panthers.

Yes, I am ready for the Pike County Bowl! I usually lug a equally colorful jacket, a logo sporting blanket, padded sports seat, collapsible umbrella, plus a luggage sized "purse" with sunscreen, eye wash, nasal spray, Shout! wipes, hand wipes, sewing kit, chewing gum, mints, mittens, chap stick, bug spray, band-aids, and anti-bacterial hand cleanser. Can't I just show up at a pep rally or tailgate party in khakis and a white oxford button down? What would the other mommies, grandmas, aunts, cousins, and sisters say? OH MY!

Here Comes the Bears!

Went to Pikeville College's last of the "two a day" practices yesterday at the Hambley Athletic complex. Looking over the players and the team as a whole, it appears they will be a little better than last year. The Bears are more in step, seem to understand the college game much better from Coach Mac Bryan's point of view.

The Defense is looking good; with the defensive front lineman really stepping up. Offensively, the Bears are really shaping up. Dan Wideman, the big quarterback is coming in for his second year. His experience is showing; and he appears to have a better handle on the college game.

The recievers have also matured this year. In watching the scrimmage, the offensive line did a particuliarly good job yesterday. So it looks like Coach Mac Bryan's Pikeville College Bears will show improvement over last year. We look forward to an exciting season!

It's all anybody can talk about....football, football, football. Testosterone has run amuck with the Kentucky sports media folks...and it's time for a little observations from a woman's perspective.

On the college scene, Coach Rich Brooks has to whip those UK Wildcats into shape before the big season opener against state rival University of Louisville Cards. From all reports following a scrimmage, the UK defense is one tough bunch. However, there are doubts about the Wildcat offensive. In Northern Kentucky, the talk is all about the rivalry between Covington Catholic and Highlands. Both schools have awesome gridiron traditions, with 23 state titles between them. We're not just Horsing Around!

The Kentucky Derby Museum will be the final resting place for Eight Belles. She will be buried beneath a magnolia tree there on Sunday, September 7. A fitting tribute to a real southern lady.

In response to Eight Belles untimely and tragic death at this year's Kentucky Derby, the Jockey Club has reccommended a study to see if the field of twenty horses is too dangerous. Most races are limited to twelve contenders. The Jockey Club is also recommending a national set of standards be set for doping detection.

Derived from a picture taken by Cincinnati photographer Gordon Baer, the painting plays off the classic baseball card. Lyons, often labelled a "loose cannon," donned a suit with a Bugs Bunny tie for the occasion. Sounds like Lyons is getting his swagger back! He did a great job at the SEC media day, conducted himself like a "grown up" and made a great representative for the University of Kentucky.

Sad day at Churchill Downs

Luke Kruytbosh, age 47, the announcer of the past ten Kentucky Derbies was found dead yesterday. Kruytbosh brought a great enthusiasm and passion to Horse Racing. In addition to Churchill Downs, the announcer was the voice for Ellis Park in Henderson Ky. Official reports have not been released; but it is believed Kruytbosh may have had coronary problems.

Keeping the bottom of your boat clean also saves gas. If you store your boat in water for any length of time, algae grows on the hull. The drag it creates forces the engine to burn more gas to get the boat through the water. A clean hull glides over the water, reducing the engine’s workload. A clean hull also improves the boat’s handling.

Finally, pay attention to your boat’s prop. If your boat is slow to get on plane or lacks top-end speed, the pitch or diameter of your propeller may be off. Have your boat mechanic check the propeller performance and upgrade if necessary. It will pay for itself in fuel savings while increasing performance. A bent propeller or one with a chunk missing from it also costs gas. Replace a damaged propeller.

Curlin falls short at Belmont's Man O'War Stakes

The 2007 Horse of the Year, Curlin, finished two lengths behind Red Rocks in Saturday's Man O'War Stakes. Prior to the race, much talk had been circulating that Curlin could be a contender in Dubai, and in the Arc race in France. That scenario would make Curlin possibly the highest earner ever.

The Belmont match up was run on turf, which was a bit of an experiment for Curlin. With the defeat, trainer Steve Asmussen is keeping his cards close to his chest in regard to Curlin's next run.

It was two years ago this very weekend, Fourth of July, that Charlie and I took our then five year old nephew to the UK Basketball museum, located in the same building as Rupp Arena.

The museum was an excellent adventure. Jacob enjoyed the interactive exhibits; the basketball mannequins, and the fabulous fifties diner exhibit (Brookings Chili). Charlie liked the pictures of "his girl" Ashley Judd, and I got a kick out of the Valerie Still displays. The museum was very well thought out; and the displays sparked nostalgia and pride.

This past October, six year old Jacob, got to witness his first LIVE University of Kentucky Basketball Game in Rupp Arena. It was a banner day, Billy Gillispie's first UK game, Pikeville College Bears was the opponent, and Uncle Charlie was doing radio broadcasts from Rupp Arena rubbing elbows with the likes of UK legends Kenny Walker and Kyle Macey. Pikeville College had a pep rally before the game, and Jacob especially enjoyed his time with the Pikeville College cheerleaders!

When we got to Rupp, Jacob wanted to go back to the museum...but our time was short. I am so glad we did get in the first visit; and even though Jacob was only five when we made that trip...he still remembers it. He smiles sheepishly and shyly...then blurts out in ten decibels, "Go Big Blue!"

I am truly sorry the museum has closed. Charlie and I have visited several times, including a private party hosted by Anthem Blue Cross Health Insurance. Rumors have it than some of the exhibits may be relocated. We sure hope so. To dream of the future; we must reflect on the past.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 27, 2008) – Warm temperatures and extra hours of sunlight entice many to spend more time outdoors in the summer, dramatically increasing exposure to harmful rays that can cause skin damage and are linked to skin cancer.
This summer, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services (CHFS) wants all Kentuckians to protect themselves and their loved ones, particularly young children, from harmful sun exposure.

“The sun can be extremely damaging to a person’s health, resulting in painful burns, sun damage and in some cases, skin cancer,” said William Hacker, M.D., commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), part of CHFS. “It’s extremely important to protect yourself. Even more important is for parents to properly supervise their children and prevent them from experiencing painful and sometimes life-threatening burns.”

According to DPH, some sunlight - about 15 minutes twice a week - is necessary for people to make and use vitamin D. However, exposure in excess of this can be dangerous.

Twenty-seven Kentuckians were hospitalized due to severe sunburns in 2007, some resulting in dangerous second- and third-degree burns, according to the state Office of Health Policy. Of those, six patients were children ranging in age from younger than 1 to 12 years old.

Overexposure to sunlight can lead to extreme pain and skin injury, particularly for young children. The cabinet’s summer safety campaign stresses the importance of adults supervising and taking adequate precautions on behalf of children to protect them from serious sunburn.

“This is not only a public health issue, but it’s also an issue of our ability and willingness to protect and ensure the safety and welfare of our children,” Hacker said.

In addition to immediate pain, overexposure to sunlight, sun damage and burns can heighten the risk for developing skin cancer. According to the Kentucky Cancer Registry, the incidence rate of invasive skin cancer in Kentucky was nearly 22 out of every 100,000 people from 2001 to 2005. The mortality rate for the same period was 4.39 per 100,000 people.

Some tips for avoiding sunburn or side effects linked to sun exposure are:

Avoid sunbathing.

Avoid tanning parlors.

Wear a hat that shields your face from the sun.

Limit your sun exposure. The sun is hottest and strongest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or greater.

Wear sunglasses that are UV rated.

Choose cosmetics, moisturizing creams and lotions that contain sunscreen.
Protect your lips with products that have a sun protection factor of 15 or greater.

LEXINGTON, KY—A specialty Kentucky license plate may soon be available in celebration of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

In order for these plates to be produced, at least 900 applications and deposits must be submitted to the World Games 2010 Foundation. If 900 applications are not received by September 30, 2008, all applications and fees will be returned.

A deposit check of $28.00 must be mailed with the completed application to the World Games 2010 Foundation. The deposit check will not be cashed until 900 applications are received.

Once 900 applications have been received, the Department of Motor Vehicle Licensing will produce the specialty plate. Production will take approximately 60 days. Individuals will be notified by email when the required number of applications and deposits are received.

Each local county clerk's office will later notify individuals by mail when their official 2010 Games plate is available for pick up. At that time, individuals will pay approximately $16.00. Ten dollars will be given to the World Games 2010 Foundation in support of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, and the remaining $6.00 will cover local fees.

Annual renewal of the plate will cost approximately $30.00.

Two Pikeville College Alumni will be making their gridiron debuts as coaches in the upcoming season. Here in Pike County, Jesse Peck will be the new head coach at Phelps High School. I look forward to seeing what the young Mr. Peck can do! Jesse had graduated from Pikeville College, and had been a coaching assistant under Bears Coach Mac Brian.

Another of Mac Brian's proteges, Brad Allen has been named the new head coach at East Ridge High School. Brad had also been a coaching assistant at Pikeville College.

Both Peck and Allen were Pikeville College Bears offensive lineman. Both got the job done. We look forward to see what they make of thier new opportunities.

Okay, I admit it. When it comes to UK vs UofL, the great Lexington vs Louisville rivalry, I am all about Big Blue. The first time I ever cried over a basketball game was in Knoxville the first "dream game" many, many years ago. But hey, if you remember even then Governor John Y. Brown wore an outrageous sports coat half UK blue and half UofL red. I may bleed blue, but my heart is all about Kentucky, and that includes those wiley Cardinals coached by a familiar character, Rick Pitino.

Things have been a little restless here in our Kentucky insurance office. Charlie, a Kentucky sportscaster and Kentucky insurance agent, has many friends in the Kentucky sports arena. Players, coaches, fans and reporters all have been filtering in the office looking a little lost. Call it withdrawals. Call it the summer doldrums. Call it whatever you want, without football and basketball these boys are just a little adrift.

The Olympics are coming...a great Summer Diversion

So maybe, we can get rid of the long faces and celebrate some Kentucky sports folks that may not get all the accolades they deserve. How about the University of Louisville Cardinals Swimming and Diving team? The Cards are sending seven swimmers to the Olympic trials! Way to go!

Big East swimmer of the year,Leslie VanWinkle, has been shaving time off her previous records and looks to be a real contender for Olympic glory. Louisville teammates Minnesota native, Liz Halet, and Alabama native Anna Dishuck will also be in the trials.

Looking the the Cardinal men, freestyle swimmer Carlos Van Isschot, a Florida native, is the most promising. Tim Collins, Doug Dietrich, and Chris Findorff round out the Cardinals hopefuls.

So get out of the summer doldrums. The Olympics are coming, and maybe just maybe some of that Kentucky sports fever can be quenched. Good luck to the U of L Swimming and Diving Team!

Kentucky High School Basketball All-Stars considered Underdogs

Our kids are heading up to Indianapolis tonight, to do battle in the annual KY vs IN all-stars basketball game. On Sunday, they will battle at Louisville Gardens. Kentucky is being described as "the underdog" having a high loss ratio against the Hoosiers. Coach Tim Davis of Campbellsville High School, and Coach Sally Zimmerman of Shelby County remain optimistic by all accounts.

Tia Gibbs, from Butler, is Kentucky's Miss Basketball and one to watch on the floor. Fans may remember, she collided with another player during the Sweet 16...and suffered a hospitalizing concussion. Nevertheless, the determined competitor was awarded MVP for the tourney. Gibbs, has signed with the Lady Commodores of Vanderbilt.

Gibbs teammates will include Janea Howard of Owensboro and Monique Reed of Fern Creek who have both committed to the Louisville Cards. For a look at the rosters of both teams check out the Lexington Herald Leader Kentucky Sports story.

Darius Miller, Mason County star headed for University of Kentucky, will be leading the Kentucky Boys as the reigning Mr. Kentucky Basketball. Scotty Hopson, a 2008 McDonald's All Star player from Hopkinsville, can also be expected to contribute to the leadership of the Kentucky Team. Hopson, is headed for UT Vol country, to sport "The Big Orange."

The Kentucky vs. Indiana All-Star game is a fundraiser for the Lions Eye Foundation.

It is said that the Indiana All-Stars have a stronger sense of tradition and pride in participating in the All-Star games. It is said Indiana is basketball country. It's time to turn those sayings around, Kentucky is and forever will be the basketball capital of the good ol' USA. Go Kentucky!

UK Basketball Leads Nation in Attendance

According to UK Athletics

It should come to no surprise to UK fans that ours is the top attendance in the United States. Just pop into any game, if you can get a ticket, and you know you have arrived at Old home week. Everybody you ever knew is vying for a seat, or in line to get the latest UK attire.

UK Athletics reports that Big Blue generates a mass of 22,554 average attendance. North Carolina and Syracuse followed. BIG ORANGE was fourth, and our rivals in Louisville were fifth.

Personally, I hope our numbers continue to improve, and HEY LOUISVILLE! Let's get some more folks out......we can do better than North Carolina!

Big Brown Kentucky Derby Winner Breezing at Belmont

Okay, I admit it. Big Brown just doesn't have all the romance and charisma that makes me all giddy. But, his confirmation and his rocket speed make him a real contender for the Triple Crown. Now THAT makes me giddy! He has convincingly won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Giddy UP at Belmont! Go Big Brown!

Left hoof healing well

Last week, Kentucky sportscasters were abuzz with concern about an abscyess on Big Brown's left foot. It had been drained, and the heat associated with the infection had diminished. Big Brown has a vertical break in his left hoof, which they expect to repair with acrylic and mesh. It's like a broken fingernail, that goes to the quick. It is painful, but heals quickly and with a little help from the manicurist...well not such a big deal. Apparently, Big Brown is prone to this affliction, and has recovered from it on several other occasions.

Big Brown is "feeling his oats" and put on quite a little show for the folks enjoying Breakfast at Belmont on Sunday. I've seen a couple of different reports, but it seems Big Brown is happy to be in the limelight and ready for the big show.

Casino Drive dragging

Casino Drive, the possible "spoiler" for Big Brown's Triple Crown attempt, has been breezing at Belmont for a few days. His time is lazy, crazy slow. Now, the Japaneese have different ideas about how horses are prepped for races; so it's hard to say whether they are reigning in Casino Drive to save energy or whether the big equine is just that much slower than the lightening quick Big Brown. Or could it be Casino Drive is lulling Big Brown's handlers into a false sense of security? Guess Saturday will tell the tale...er make that "horse tail." (Sorry I couldn't resist the pun!>

State officials visit Sprint Cup Race at Charlotte

FRANKFORT, KY – Gov. Steve Beshear and Jerry Carroll, the man who helped build the Kentucky Speedway, spent Sunday getting a first-hand view of how a world-class NASCAR Sprint Cup race is run. Both the governor and Carroll returned to Kentucky optimistic that new Kentucky Speedway owner Bruton Smith can find a way to get a similar race in Kentucky as early as next year.

Gov. Beshear, Carroll, and Larry Hayes, Secretary of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet, were guests of Smith for the running of the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. The visit comes days after the announcement that Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI), headed by Smith, would acquire Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky.

“It’s an amazing thing to see. It is something that will have a tremendous economic impact for Kentucky as we help further develop the Kentucky Speedway with this new group,” said Gov. Beshear. “We talked in general about forming a partnership to make sure that Mr. Smith’s operation is a success. I assured him that we would do that. He will be coming to Kentucky in the near future and he and Mr. Carroll will be meeting with me and my staff and we will have more specific conversations about that at that time.”

The question of whether Smith and SMI can get a Sprint Cup race scheduled for the Kentucky Speedway in 2009 has been up in the air. While NASCAR is quoted as saying it may be too late to change the schedule of races for next year, Carroll says he has faith that Bruton Smith can make it happen.

“I’ve been around him for awhile, and I have to say that whenever Bruton Smith says he can do something he normally gets it done,” said Carroll. “I was very encouraged by the things he said today. I would keep my hopes up for 2009, I really would. He wants to have the race here. He loves Kentucky.”

The atmosphere surrounding the race and the potential that a similar event offers Kentucky are all positive factors that Gov. Beshear looks forward to seeing in the Commonwealth.

“It was an exciting day. It’s really a great family affair. And it’s going to fit in so well here in the Commonwealth and so well there at Kentucky Speedway,” said the governor. “There are some great things ahead for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in NASCAR racing.”

Combined with the international attention that will be focused on Kentucky in September with the Ryder Cup and the World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park in 2010, Gov. Beshear says a NASCAR Sprint Cup race in 2009 would be a true trifecta for the Commonwealth.

Big Brown Triple Crown Contender :Casino Drive Spoiler?

"Colorful" hardly begins to describe Big Brown's trainer, Rick Dutrow. Far from being "politically correct" and definitely far from being a "saint", Dutrow has had his ups and downs. An admitted recovering drug addict and banned from racing for numerous infractions including overmedicating horses, you have to wonder how he got to this new crescendo. Big Brown is poised to do something that hasn't been done in thirty years...win the Triple Crown.

Time magazine offers up an article very revealing about Dutrow, the New York enigma. In regard to Big Brown's biggest competition at the Belmont, Casino Drive, who has been making big waves in Japan...here is Dutrow's comments in the Time article, "Dutrow says he would tell his jockey "to find Yamamoto," referring to the Japanese admiral who conceived the Pearl Harbor attack, "and chew his ___." (I deleted the word, but you can figure it out)His jockey is of course two time Kentucky Derby winner Kent Desormeaux.

Casino Drive, won the Peter Pan Stakes a few weeks back. Oddly enough, jockey Desormeaux was "up" on that race. Will that give Desormeaux an advantage? Dutrow, quoting Desormeaux says Casino Drive doesn't measure up to champion, Big Brown.

A rider for Casino Drive has yet to be announced. Rumor has it that Edgar Prado is one of three candidates. In another twist, it was Prado who Dutrow had originally wanted to mount Big Brown.

Big Brown had a workout at Belmont a few days ago, and the trainer is well pleased. Casino Drive, is scheduled to workout on Sunday.

Say what you like about Dutrow, Big Brown seems to be the real deal. Now, as I have said before he is no Secretariat, my all time ideal horse. But with Barbaro and Eight Belles fates throwing a pallour on racing, it's time for a hero. The win could be healing for Dutrow, for Desormeaux, and for the the industry. We can only hope.

Safe Kids Worldwide Offers Sports Safety Tips

Each year, nationwide, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under are treated for sports injuries. Roughly half of these injuries are sustained in solo activities — especially biking, skating and skateboarding — but a pproximately one out of four participants in youth soccer, football or baseball has been injured at least once. About 15 percent of kids playing basketball have been injured, and 12 percent of kids playing softball.

In team sports, most injuries — 62 percent — occur during practices, not games. “Always insist that your kids wear the same protective gear, do the same warmups and take all the same precautions when they practice as when they're getting ready for a game,” says Chrissy Cianflone, director of program operations at Safe Kids Worldwide.

“When we think of sports injuries, we think of dramatic tackles or falls or being hit in the head, but young athletes are also at risk of strains and repetitive-motion injuries,” says Cianflone. “If your coach recommends certain types of warmups, it's not just to make you a better athlete — it will help keep you from getting hurt.” Repetitive-motion injuries account for nearly half of all sports injuries to students in grade 6 and above.

In a 2000 survey by Safe Kids Worldwide, 30 percent of parents said their child had been injured at least once while playing a team sport, 15 percent said their child had been injured more than once and about 7 percent said their child suffered a serious injury. “Contact sports have a higher rate of injuries than solo sports, but injuries from solo sports such as biking or skateboarding tend to be more severe,” says Cianflone.

Kentucky Sports Injury Prevention Checklist

Safe Kids USA recommends these precautions for all children playing or practicing any individual or team sport:

~Before signing up for a sport, get a general physical exam.

~Always wear appropriate protective gear for the activity — for practice as well as games — and make sure it's the right size and properly adjusted.

~Do your warmups. Again, if it's important before a game, it's important before practice too.

~Make sure responsible adults know and enforce the safety rules of the sport, are present to provide supervision, and are trained in first aid and CPR. Also, make sure the field is in safe condition.

~Never “play through” an injury. Get immediate help from a coach or trainer and be sure to mention everything that hurts or aches.

~Follow the rules. In most sports, the rules are based not only on sportsmanship, but safety.

Last but not least: “Stay hydrated,” says Cianflone. “Drink plenty of water or electrolyte sports drink before and during the activity, and rest frequently during hot weather. A child can lose up to a quart of sweat during two hours of exercise, and kids get overheated more quickly than adults and cannot cool down as easily.”

Running Amuck

College basketball recruiting is getting pretty weird according to Dick Vitale. He said it is "absolutely wacky" as an eighth grader has given Lexington Kentucky Wildcats Coach Billy Gillispie a verbal committment. Apparently Gillispie saw the player, Michael Avery, at a Lavon James camp and offered him a scholarship on the spot.

Dick Vitale is knocking this move. Alot can happen in those five years between junior high school and college. The world is a changing scenerio. Vitale points out that there is much pressure on these young athletes, being observed so early in their careers.

In my own observations, we are seeing too many children scrutinized too early. Look at O.J. Mayo. By eighth grade, there was constant buzz about his NBA career. What kind of pressure is that putting on the players? Can kids really be kids? Even though the player in question is being recruited by the Wildcats, I must agree with Dickie V. Five years out, who knows how a player will change. We cannot predict athletic development, academic performance, or even social skills. Why put kids under the microscope so early? And as a recruiting team, a committment five years out may not be what the team needs when the committment is due to be fulfilled. This cannot be good for the athletes or the University of Kentucky.

Big Brown to Stand at Three Chimneys

Big Brown coming back to Kentucky

If you followed my Kentucky horse racing posts, you know I was not a fan of Big Brown in the Kentucky Derby. Perhaps it's my Agricultural Economics background, but I just felt like he had not run enough races to be a solid contender. (I was too conservative) I ate my hat (quite a pretty one I must confess) on Derby Day and took a wait and see attitude for The Preakness.

Behind the scenes between the Derby and Preakness, the Clay family were negotiating Big Brown's future. It seems Big Brown will go to Three Chimneys Farm. Big Brown will stand in good company. Three Chimneys has had the likes of Point Given, Silver Charm, and Smarty Jones in their stables. Dynaformer, sire of Barbaro, and Seattle Slew, the only Triple Crown Winner to go undefeated, have also called Three Chimney's home.

The Big Brown deal monetary figure has not been disclosed. What is interesting, is the deal was sealed BEFORE the Preakness was run! WOW! Before I signed that contract I would have taken a skip and a jump down the road from Three Chimney's, to Woodford Reserve, for a courage reinforcement. Giggle

Big Brown Canters Away with the Preakness

Saturday's Preakness made a "Big Brown fan" out of me. It was so engaging to see the triple crown contender wanting his head, and KD holding him back. When the jockey finally "pushed the button" Big Brown just flew! For just a minute, I was sure I saw wings on the big horse's hooves. WOW!

As I have noted previously, I am a big fan of Affirmed and of course Big Red Secretariat. In my opinion, Secretariat is "the horse above horses." However, Big Brown gives me pause and makes me smile with the anticipation of the last leg of the Triple Crown, The Belmont Stakes. Guess I will come to the Big Brown party a little late...but I'm on board!"

Kentucky Basketball Player Makes Cut

Shelby Valley standout, Elisha Justice is getting alot of Kentucky sports buzz this season. Justice is invited to the University of Florida "Elite Camp" this summer according to Shelby Valley HS Coach Jason Booher. The six foot guard, a junior this year has also been invited by John Pelphry to the Arkansas Razorbacks "Elite Camp."

As a sophomore, Justice lead Shelby Valley High School (Pike County KY) in scoring averaging 14 points a game and 4 steals and deflections. He is on pace to set a school record in steals. Justice was the first freshman player named MVP for the fifteenth region tournament. So Shelby Valley, things are looking up!

Kentucky Sports Mop Up Louisville KY Basketball, Preakness Horse Racing, and CBA East Ky Miners

Louisville KY Cards Basketball

Rick Pitino, head coach for Louisville KY Cardinals Basketball, recently announced co-captains for the 2008-2009 Cards season. Senior forward Terrance Williams and Senior guard Andre' McGee will slide into the slot left vacant by departing senior David Padgett.

T-Will, Terrance Williams, begins his senior year at U of L, ranked #48 the school's career scoring records. He has 1,102 points to his credit.

Looking to Louisville KY Cardinals Women's Basketball, we are disappointed to note that Yuliya Tokova will not be returning to the court for her senior year. What a huge disappointment! Tokova has had some serious injuries, and apparently her ongoing herniated disc problems will keep her from the hardwoods.

Horse racing saddling up for Preakness Stakes

If all goes as planned, Big Brown will have shipped from Louisville KY's Churchill Downs Wednesday. Gayego appears to be the only other horse from the Kentucky Derby to opt in for the Preakness. Much to my chagrin, Big Brown ran away with the roses at the Kentucky Derby. Gayego, had a lackluster Derby performance.

I failed to mark down my source, but I was reading that equine experts are particularly impressed with Big Brown's heart. It seems the crowd favorite has a large heart, perhaps even bigger than the greatest of all horses, Big Red, Secretariat. We look forward to Saturday's festivities, broadcast on NBC Sports beginning at 4:30.

Josh Pace, is making the move to the NBA. In a press release from Pikeville KY's East Kentucky Miners, they note that Pace is working out with the Golden State Warriors, the Miami Heat, and the Indiana Pacers. (Pace-Pacers now that would be funny!)

Two of Pikeville's players were recently named to the Top 20 Minor Players in the CBA. Pace, who was leading scorer in the CBA's 2007-08 season, ranked fourth. James Jackson, nicknamed "Boo", was ranked eleventh.

Drive Smart! Smart driving habits encouraged through event at Kentucky Speedway

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Opening day at the Kentucky Speedway includes a reminder to motorists to drive smart, wear a seat belt and follow the rules of the road. Sponsored by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, The Drive Smart! Buckle Up Kentucky 150 race will be held May 10 at 8 p.m. and marks the beginning of a three-week information and enforcement campaign, known as Click It or Ticket, encouraging seat belt usage across the state.

Despite a wealth of data showing that seat belts save lives – and also despite implementation of a primary seat belt law – Kentucky remains at the bottom nationally in seat belt usage rates, at 67 percent. The annual enforcement campaign, which begins May 19, will attempt to change that as officers buckle down on those not buckled up.

“It’s always a pleasure to partner with the Kentucky Speedway,” KYTC’s Highway Safety Programs Director Boyd Sigler said. “They’ve been a huge supporter in our efforts to increase awareness for our highway safety initiatives.”

Checkpoints will be conducted throughout Kentucky during the mobilization. Those not buckled up will receive a citation. But people who are wearing a seat belt will receive a different kind of ticket – a “Click It FOR Tickets” voucher. Those who are following the rules of the road can register to win one set of twelve tickets to the Kentucky Speedway. Two sets of tickets will be available to the NASCAR Nationwide Series on June 14, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on July 19, and the IndyCar Series on Aug. 9.

Seventy-two percent of passenger vehicle occupants who were involved in a fatal crash in 2006, but who were buckled up, survived. When worn correctly, seat belts are proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat occupants by 45 percent – and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs, and minivans.

“The majority of those who still don’t use their seat belts are men 18 to 34,” Sigler said. “Many of those people are also race fans. So, this race is a great opportunity for us to reach a very specific audience. But, Click It or Ticket is not about writing tickets. It’s about saving lives.”

Sponsorship of the race includes promotion of the race as the Buckle Up Kentucky 150, signage at the Speedway, ads in the program, and inclusion on race day.

Recruiters On the Prowl

UK Wildcat Coach, Billy Gillispie, said Saturday that Guard Derrick Jasper will probably transfer. Details came out that Jasper is homesick for his native Compton California. Jasper averaged 4.2 points, and 5.5 rebounds per game as a UK sophomore last season; after recovering from knee surgery. Jasper saw much of playing time with the Wildcats, and was a starting point guard for most of his two year Kentucky career. Getting hurt last season, a Compton California paper reported Jasper wanted to be closer to home, where his family could see him play more often. Jasper had really picked up his game this year; and the vacancy leaves Gillispie with another slot to fill.

Rumors are floating that the big freshman, Morakinyo Williams, is also asking for release from his scholarship. With two players "biting the dust" so to speak, Coach Billy Gillispie will be making some dust of his own on the recruiting trail.

O.J. Mayo looking at then NBA

O.J. Mayo back in the news again. Mayo, supposedly received cash and benefits from a promoter after leaving high school in West Virginia. O.J. Mayo, a name most Kentucky sports fan have heard of, has been all over the eastern United Stats playing basketball. He began playing in Kentucky at Rose Hill Christian Academy. From there he went to Ohio, then returned to his native West Virginia to finish out his high school career. Mayo then went on to USC. After one year, he is going pro.

No big surprise there. There was a one-year stipulation that Mayo had to fulfill in his effort to be recruited by the NBA. Allot of colleges did not recruit Mayo, as it was known he was a "one year" and out. Apparently, Mayo has declared himself for the 2008 NBA draft.

Mayo was at one time a teammate of Patrick Patterson. O.J.Mayo began playing ball as a sixth grader for Rose Hill Christian Academy in Ashland KY. Since seventh graders can play varsity sports in the state of Kentucky, he began his varsity career dwarfing many older athletes' performance records.

Billy Gillispie on the recruiting trail again, as he picks up the 6'7" Madisonville, KY Junior Jon Hood. A great player for the Maroons, Hood came into his own last summer with his AAU Team. Hood is the second player from the Class of 2009 to sign with Coach Gillespie. (The second player being G.J. Viterano a guard from McKinley, Texas.)

Madisonville, is the hometown of UK Wildcat "great" Travis Ford. Ford, had a tremendous career at Kentucky, and is of course a Division 1 coach. We all know what an asset Ford was to the UK team; and we expect great things from Hood.

Hood averaged 23.8 points per game; 8.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists for the Madisonville North Hopkins High School last season. He broke his wrist attempting a dunk in the district tournament. The injury prevented him from playing in the regional. However, from all reports Hood has made a full recovery.

Hood turns seventeen this weekend. This Friday, instead of playing in a tournament, Jon will be taking his date to prom. Sounds like he has his head on straight;Kentucky sports are not the only thing in life that matters!

Coach Gillispie, one of the best recruiters in the nation, already has seventeen players signed up, during his first year here at Kentucky. Hopefully Billy G will get us back on the path. Go Big Blue!

Now boys, a word of advice. Folks in Wisconsin are more than "fan-actics"; they are just plain crazy. Charlie and I visited Lambeau Field last spring as part of our Humana Health Insurance training. Upon touring the stadium, we learned the Packer fans voted to keep the hard metal stadium seating rather than replace it with more comfortable accommodations. They would rather freeze their tushies on icy cold metal seats than give up the history and atmosphere that makes Lambeau Field one of football's most sacred sites. Go figure.

I don't know what Vince Lombardi would say about that, but I wish the Louisville alums well. However, if you are thinking "Packers" the best advise I can offer is PACK your long johns. You are going to need them!

Kentucky Derby..Sad End to Eight Belles

I had hoped today would be a day when Charlie and I would exchange banter about my Derby picks. After all, I am the horse racing enthusiast and my pick "Monba" finished last. On the other hand, Charlie picked "Big Brown" going with the crowd favorite. On any normal post derby day, we would be laughing...and he would be giving me a really hard time. But not this year.

Louisville has embodied Dickens famous quote "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" during this years Derby Festival and Kentucky Derby. In a cruel twist of fate, the Delta Queen won the golden antlers in the Great Steamboat Race but may be unfairly retired if Congress has it's way. Larry Jones saw victory at The Oaks, then must have felt sheer agony when second place Derby Star, Eight Belles had to be put down. Both ladies won their battles, but seem to have lost the war.

To Larry Jones et al, I extend my deepest condolences for the loss of a filly who captured our imagination and fancy. To the supporters to keep the Delta Queen afloat, continue to fight for exemptions. Like Yogi Berra opined, "It ain't over, til it's over."

Reviewing the Field

It's been a "tough turf" for me this week, trying to pick a winning Derby trifecta. Do I go with my heart, or do I go with analyzing the record? Do I just say "Oh hey, that jockey wears pretty silks" or do I take my old Animal Sciences professor's opinion..."Horse conformation is everything." This year is just tough!"

I like Nick Zito and Anak Nakal. Jockey Rafael Berjarno made his reputation at Cincinnati's River Downs. Anak Nakal, is owned by Four Roses, and "Roses" are always lucky at Derby. Right?

Nick also has Cool Coal Man, and living here in the Kentucky Coalfields I have to take that into account. Breeder Will Farrish, who also has Court Vision in the lineup, is the guy that hosts the Queen of England when she comes in for the races. He ought to know a little something about horses. Right?

Then there's Todd Pletcher and Monba. Lots of good pedigree there, including Breeder Alice Headly Chandler whose daddy founded Keeneland. Monda was the first to cross the finish at Keeneland's Toyota Bluegrass Stakes.

Fellow Northern Kentucky native, Mike Battaglia, has Big Brown at the 3-1 favorite this morning. Charlie, who has never sports casted a Kentucky Horse Race, says he goes with the favorite. Big Brown placed first in the Florida Derby, and Kent Desmormeaux is a good jockey. But alas! Big Brown is in the 20th post position. If my math is right, it's been 79 years since a horse won from that position.

Colonel John and the Winstar Farms team looks pretty good. I've always liked jockey Edgar Prado, who is mounted on Adrrino.

My heart says go with the red and white silks of Eight Belles. Larry Jones from down in Hoptown looks like a good old Kentucky boy who knows his stuff. Eight Belles placed first in the Oaklawn Park Fantasy.

Enough Already! Here's my picks

As a pencil pushing, number crunching Kentucky Insurance agent, I am going with Todd Pletcher and Monba for the win. Second, is Eight Belles and Larry Jones. As much as I like Nick Zito, I am counting him out and putting Big Brown in number three.Win, Place, and Show...there you have it.

Is Steamboat Racing a Kentucky Sport? I think so. If you chase a little white ball around a cow pasture with holes in it....it's characterized as the grand game of golf. If you walk across a balance beam, like it was a beam in a tobacco barn, we call it gymnastics. If cars are racing at Kentucky Speedway, well they put signs up saying "Welcome Sports Fans." Okay then, steamboatin' is a sport!

Charlie, as a Kentucky sportscaster, tries very hard to take the high road when it comes to being on the air and being a fan. The exception of course being our local college. You cannot be "The Voice of Pikeville College Bears" and not be a fan.

Well, I'm not a sportscaster and every once in the while I am admittedly biased.Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved the grand lady, Delta Queen. To watch her afloat on the Ohio River, is to see a graceful swan sail by with the finesse of a dancer. Her historic architecture and design are breathtaking. And OH! The calliope echoing off the little hills along the river. How uplifting and joyous! I am passionate about the Delta Queen, and have blogged about it on our Kentucky Insurance blog.

Who is the winner?

And so, as the Louisville Belle, the Cincinnati Belle, and the Delta Queen got into position crowds at the wharf, at Louisville Waterworks, and along the race route awaited the historic race. The Belle, having a 22-19 record over the Queen was favored. However, with the life of the Delta Queen in question, surely she was the sentimental favorite.

We in eastern Kentucky, surely appreciate the importance of shipping coal. However, yesterday, a coal barge got in the way and the Louisville Belle made the turn early, presumably for safety reasons. Nevertheless, the Delta Queen prevailed. I know as she sailed back to Cincinnati, with the Golden Antlers proudly displayed...that the folks that cherish her were sadly happy.

This year's race was particularly poignant, as it may be the Delta Queen's last. Congress, in it's infinite wisdom, has failed to give the historic vessel an exemption to continue. The government fears the wooden ship will catch fire and put the passengers and crew in peril. Now I won't tell you what I think about all that, but if you live on a Lexington horse farm...you might have some of it on your shoes!

Do you mark time by the Derby Winner?

Like many historical events, I sometimes equate time frames with that years' Kentucky Derby winners. For instance, the first time Grandma went to Derby and picked the winner was in 1962 with Decidedly ridden by Bill Hartack. In 1964, Grandma was right on the money with Northern Dancer, jockeyed by Hartack. I joined 4-H in 1969, when Majestic Prince won the Derby race. Guess who the jockey was? Yep, it was Bill Hartack.

By 1973, I was a teenager. Grandma and I would stretch out in the floor with newspaper prognostications strewn all about and pick out our favorites. In my mind's eye I still clearly see red circles drawn around the name Secretariat Seventy three was a good year, as Secretariat and Ron Turcott not only won the Derby; but went on to Triple Crown victories. All Hail Big Red!

Sweet Sixteen in 1976, and finally a Kentucky Driver's License! (Click this link if you need Kentucky Auto Insurance) Hat's off to Bold Forbes and Angel Cordero!

In 1977, Seattle Slew and Cruguet were the rage, with another Triple Crown. The horse even got mention in the popular film "Harper Valley PTA" starring Barbara Eden. Grandma and I could not agree in 1978, as she loved Calumet anything. But fellow teenager, Steve Cauthen lived less than ten miles from me...so I said Stevie and Affirmed all the way.

By the time I headed out for UK, my Derby passion had to be put on hold. How could they put Derby on the same week as finals? It was truly a travesty! Looking back at some of my grades I should have partied in the Churchill Downs infield. My grades probably wouldn't have suffered anymore than they already had. Giggle.

But during college I did study the "old" Derby winners. As a UK "aggie" I had spent many hours out on UK's Maine Chance agricultural farm once owned by cosmetics mogul, Elizabeth Arden. Did you know Arden owned Jet Pilot the 1947 Kentucky Derby Winner? See, I did learn something in college!

I was pulling for Willie Shoemaker in 1986 mounted on Ferdinand. In 1992, the joy and elation I felt for Pat Day and Lil E. Tee was beyond measure. (I have a little Pat Day statue on my desk at work I loved watching Pat ride, especially at Keeneland!)

Now Charlie, who is all about Kentucky Sports, is not as passionate about horse racing as I am. But his first sports broadcast, was just a few weeks before Monarchos won the Derby at 1:59:97. Not too shabby!"

In recent years, I have been fairly accurate at choosing the Derby winner. However, in 2004, Birdstone just couldn't pull it off, yet went of to win the Belmont. Now Birdstone was owned by Marylou Whitney who has the greatest HATS ever, and with Nick Zito and Edgar Prado on the team I was so sure Smarty Jones would be defeated.

So what about this Kentucky Derby? Grandma has been gone many years now. I don't lay in floor with red crayons circling picks in the Kentucky Post. I'm much more sophisticated. I print racing forms off the internet, and circle them with a blue felt tip marker. Now that's technology!

In May of 1978, the senior class of Boone County High School Florence KY was counting down the days until graduation. Across the county, jockey Stevie Cauthen was counting down the days until the Kentucky Derby. The class of 1978 was dreaming of making history...but Steve Cauthen made it.

Could that have really been over thirty years ago?

For generations, my family has had a fascination with the Kentucky Derby. Grandma's people had ties to Calumet farm, grandest of the Lexington KY horse farms. She even painted her house white with red trim, in honor of Calumet. In 1978, she was thrilled Jorge Velasquaz would be wearing the devil red and blue silks. So it comes as no surprise, Grandma was pulling for Alydar.

As for me, well I went to 4-H Camp with Steve Cauthen. He was less than a month older than me. He was a local kid I could identify with...and so of course I championed Affirmed. Never mind that I had never heard of Harbor View Farm.

On that glorious Saturday in May, all was well with the world. We gathered around the TV, got misty eyed when they sang "My Old Kentucky Home", then held our breath as they shouted "Riders Up!" And then, They were OFF!

It was not until the second turn that Steve and Affirmed seemed to get control. But then at the quarter mile, things got pretty exciting. After some checks, bumping, and literally jockeying for position, it was Affirmed who crossed the finish line first.

I was elated. A few weeks later, Affirmed prevailed at the Preakness and the Belmont. A triple crown!!!!

I still remember Grandma getting me a copy of Time Magazine with Stevie Cauthen on the cover in pink silks. How great was that?

In retrospect

Many horse racing enthusiasts believe that the Alydar and Affirmed rivalry, was perhaps the best in recorded history. The great equines met ten times, with Affirmed winning seven of those match ups. Alydar was to be the saving grace for Calumet, and his untimely and suspicious death may have been the nail in the coffin for bankrupt Calumet. So sad.

It's been a long time since there was a pairing the likes of Alydar and Affirmed. But you never know, the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday. Business obligations will keep me away from Louisville KY and Churchill Downs, but you can be sure we'll gather around the TV, get misty eyed when they sing "My Old Kentucky Home" and wait excitedly for the greatest two minutes in Kentucky sports.

Pike Central HS Player has College on her Mind Pikeville KY

Pike Central star Kayla Lowe signs a national letter of intent with Murray State making her the first division one player in school history. Kayla has been one of the best players in the 15th region for the last four years culminating in being named All-State by Louisville KY's Courier Journal.

I am glad to see her get this opportunity. Kayla is a great person and will do well at this level both in the classroom and on the court. I have watched her play throughout her carrier and think that she will be a good college player. Lowe has the size and quickness to play forward at this level. Her family support will be a big part of her success at Murray and I know that here family will be there for her. Congratulations Kayla!

Andre' Woodson, a quarterback, led the Wildcats to victory in back-to-back Music City Bowls. Named the most valueable player in both of those match-ups, Woodson really made my day with the New Year's Eve win in 2007. Charlie and I, along with my sorority sister and her husband, sat right beside the Florida State Band during that battle. Believe me, the Seminoles War Chant with tomahawk action was very annoying. Thank you for the win Mr. Woodson!

Woodson was recently here in Pikeville signing autographs during our local festival. He was sponsored by Appalachian Wireless. Charlie and our six year old nephew, Jacob, went to the booth to get signed prints of Commonwealth Stadium and a photo poster of Woodson donned in his Number 3 UK Wildcat uniform.

As UK alums, Charlie and I are proud of all Kentucky athletes. We wish the quartet success, happiness, and good health as they move to their new teams.

The 2008 Forcht Group of Kentucky/KHSAA Sportsmanship Recognition Banquet is set for Sunday, April 27,beginning at 5 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in Lexington. This marks the 12th year of the program recognizing outstanding sportsmanship.

KHSAA member schools each select one boy and one girl as the local school sportsmanship winner. School winners are then eligible to be selected as the regional winner. From the 32 regional winners, one boy and one girl will be selected as the state winner and receive a one-time $3,000 scholarship courtesy of Forcht Group of Kentucky. Selection criteria includes: Grade-Point-Average; letters of recommendations; leadership roles/honors; response to case study essay; verification of no game disqualifications.

Each regional winner receives a plaque, a mantle clock from the KHSAA Officials Division and a chair and $200 book scholarship courtesy of Forcht Group of Kentucky.

The following individuals are regional winners to be recognized and are eligible for the overall statewide award.
